Accepts Mahatma Gandhi’s request to visit him in Pondicherry
All the while, Sri Aurobindo is following the political and other developments in the country with special attention. He has certain differences with Mahatma Gandhi on several major planks of his program, e.g., non-violence as a political creed, Charkha economics, approach to the communal problem. But he sees in Gandhi the chosen leader to carry the freedom movement forward. By 1939, he is in a position to send word to Gandhi with a positive note through Surendra Mohan Ghose, Bengal’s Provincial Congress leader. Surendra agrees to arrange the meeting and to travel to Pondicherry with Gandhi. However, when the time comes for Gandhi to visit Sri Aurobindo, Surendra is jailed and the meeting never comes about.
