The structure of the being is an exceptional contribution from Sri Aurobindo and can be viewed from two perspectives or systems: concentric and vertical. These two systems are not mutually exclusive but work simultaneously together.
The Concentric System
The concentric system starts from the outer being and its mind, vital and body consciousness which has the ego as its center of gravity. It traverses an inner or subliminal realm of consciousness which includes the inner being, a new plane of personality formulated by Sri Aurobindo. The inner being has the soul as its mediator or center of gravity. This system culminates in the innermost being or soul, around which evolves the psychic being. Thus, the concentric system encompasses three beings: the outer being, the inner being and the innermost being. This system was examined in Level 2: Parts of the Being and Levels of Consciousness.
The Vertical System
The vertical system runs from the lowest plane of consciousness below the physical plane, the inconscience, up to the superconscience or supermind, and beyond to Satchidananda. Above Satchidananda is the one Supreme Reality, Para Brahman.
Withing the mind plane is the mind proper, Higher Mind, Illumined Mind, Intuitive Mind and Overmind.

This system or hierarchy of consciousness follows the trajectory of the evolution of consciousness. Foundational to the vertical system is Sri Aurobindo’s unique perspective on the involution and evolution of consciousness. An overview of the process of involution and evolution is presented in the first part of this course, along with an article on the detailed comparison to several more traditional theories of evolution, including Darwin’s.
In this session, we will explore the descending realms of consciousness formed during the involutionary stage of creation, from Para Brahman down to the Intuition and Intuitive Mind. The Illumined Mind down to the Inconscient has been covered in previous course sessions.
