Dr. Girija Shettar

has practiced traditional yoga meditation for more than 30 years. She learned formal meditation in her early twenties from a master in Chennai who was a specialist in Vedic-Tantra philosophy and practice. The meeting led Girija to drop her career as an actress and spend five years intensively studying meditation and Indic philosophy and spirituality.

During this time, she developed a great love for India and for the great yogic Masters, including Paramahamsa Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda, Babaji, Sri Yukteswar, Master Mahasaya, Paramahamsa Yogananda, and Ramana Maharishi. But there were two Masters in particular whose writings resonated with Girija. These masters were Sri Aurobindo and the Mother (Mira Alfassa). Girija thereafter became a regular visitor to their Ashram in Pondicherry and intentional community of Auroville.

Following a PhD in the philosophy and yoga of Sri Aurobindo, Girija completed a stint at the Sri Aurobindo Centre for Advanced Research in Pondicherry as a tutor in Integral Philosophy. She taught “The metaphysical foundations of Integral Yoga in The Life Divine” and “What Am I?”

Following a master’s degree in psychology, for which her thesis focused on Mindfulness and Meditation, she was inspired to train in teaching meditation.

Since then, she has been teaching groups and one-on-on meditation classes.
