The Ideal of Human Unity: Independence, Harmony, and Challenges to Achieving Human Unity

In The Ideal of Human Unity, Sri Aurobindo has written extensively about the importance of individual independence and self-determination particularly for the purpose of evolving according to one’s own nature. He has also written that human unity is an ideal for which society and the individual should aspire and try to bring to fruition. This presentation will endeavor to address independence and the related concept of self-determination in relation to human unity, in terms which express Sri Aurobindo’s view. Sri Aurobindo notes also that in order to attain harmony, it is necessary to balance the life of the individual with the life of the social grouping, the collective.
