Nature’s Sacrifice to the Spirit

Nature’s Sacrifice to the Spirit

“Sri Aurobindo describes sacrifice as a “truth in Nature,” a law “traveling in Nature,” something “compelled by the universal World-Force,” or “the Divine Soul submitting itself to Force and Matter.” While the deeper significance of sacrifice is spiritual, we will examine how Sri Aurobindo’s description also reflects a reality visible in the physical world. Particularly in biology, many aspects of evolution and the dynamics of life reflect an unconscious acceptance of the law of sacrifice. This is not merely a metaphor or a poetic view, but a deeper truth that contemporary science—though still largely focused on reducing life to mechanistic processes—is on the verge of discovering. The interaction between spirit and matter is the expression of a sacrifice manifesting in a wide variety of phenomena also visible in the natural world. If we adopt this complementary view, a whole new understanding and vision of Nature becomes possible.”
